What is beautiful, and what is not?

It’s funny, this thing called beauty, or beautiful…what is it, who decided what is beautiful and what is ugly? I find myself all the time stopping in my track to look at something that most people would consider…nothing, or if nothing, then ugly or uninteresting.

There are construction sites all over Austin, it’s been going on for a while now and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, this building frenzy. Cranes and building materials cluttering up a whole block here and a corner there…sunlight over sparkling metal, rusty iron or discarded pieces of wood laying around…shadows making patterns, creating  new landscapes…

I made these three pictures a couple of months ago.  This is a lot on 3rd and Colorado downtown Austin, TX, right where Sullivan’s steakhouse is and not too long ago it was a parking lot, like a concrete meadow, tucked in between the taller buildings. That space is now gone and Austin is a little richer and a little poorer.
